Summary "The Character Education Inquiry was undertaken by Teachers College at the request of the Institute of Social and Religious Research. From the beginning there has been the most generous regard for the freedom of the investigators. Beyond defining in a general way the major field of study, no stipulation was made as to the problems to be attacked or the techniques to be used. We were asked to undertake a basic research and were left free to determine its nature and scope. Very wisely, however, a group of advisers was provided to which we could present our plans for appraisal at any stage of the enterprise. We began in the fall of 1924 with two immediately practicable projects--a study of deception, and a beginning in the use of tests of moral knowledge and attitude. Our hope was that in executing these projects we might learn something of the possibilities of research in the highly intangible field of character study, and could mature plans for the entire period. They proved to be admirably adapted to these purposes"--Introduction. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)
