Summary |
The twelve year old Merlin has tried to run away but he is seized and carried away by boat to the port of Kerrec in Brittany. He escapes and makes his way to the town. He passes through the great stones of Kerrec, where he has a vision of a sword in the sky. Already he is becoming aware that he has the gift of 'the sight', of prophecy. Later Merlin has another vision, that of a silver warrior fighting a great white bull, which he slays. He is caught by the soldiers of Uther Pendragon. Uther is about the whip him when Ambrosius, Uther's older brother, arrives. Ambrosius at once realises that Merlin is different - he carries with him the brooch of the red dragon, given to him by his mother, Ninianne, in Britain. Ambrosius recognises it. Merlin identifies Ambrosius as the warrior who slew the bull in his vision. Uther mocks all this, but Ambrosius has already realised that Merlin must be his son, the child of his romance with Ninianne many years ago. Merlin has the joy of discovering that he has found his father. The years pass, and the love grows between them. Meanwhile Ambrosius plans his invasion of Britain to regain his throne |
