Summary In a great overnight battle, Merlin guides Ambrosius and Uthers' army to victory. Ambrosius is now King of All Britain. In the aftermath of battle he confides to Merlin that he would like to build a great monument - a tribute to himself and to all those who died in the Wars. But their victory has been saddened by the death of Ninianne. A new crisis is looming. The Saxons have now allied with a powerful Irish Prince, Giloman of Killare. Uther and Merlin travel to Killare where the Irish are routed. At Killare there is a ring of Standing Stones which superstitious men caution Merlin from entering. Despite this, Merlin enters the ring and, reluctantly guarded by Ralf, spends the night asleep on a great black altar stone. He knows that this stone must be carried to Britain, to the Giant's Dance (Stonehenge). The altar stone is slowly bought back to Britain; Merlin is grappling with the building the Giant's Dance when a messenger arrives to tell Merlin that his father has died in Winchester. Merlin vows that he will complete the Giant's Dance as Ambrosius' monument, and Ninianne's and more. He persists at his work. During the building Camlach attempts to murder him but is himself killed by a falling lintel. Uther is still contemptuous of Merlin and watches the rise of Stonehenge with indifference. this feeling is quashed by the final sequence of events: Merlin completes the Dance and, with a funeral of one thousand torches buries Ambrosius and Ninianne in its centre. A great vision is shown, a vision of Ambrosius in reunion with Ninianne, and of the young King Arthur, as yet unborn, who will be the greatest King that Britain will ever know
